Highlights
- One of the best loved beaches in the north
- Far quieter than the beaches of the south
- Soft white sand and wide, shallow water
- Named after the casuarina trees along the shore
Overview
Casuarina beach, on Karainagar island off the Jaffna peninsula, is the best-known beach in the north. It takes its name from the casuarina trees that line the shore. The sand is soft and pale, and the water is shallow and usually calm, so it is popular with local families at weekends.
What it is like
The beach is long and open, with shade under the trees. You can wade a long way out before the water gets deep. There are few facilities: some snack and drink stalls at busy times, and simple changing areas. On weekdays it can be almost empty.
Swimming
The calm, shallow water makes it one of the easier swimming beaches in the area, though conditions change with the season and wind. Watch out for jellyfish at some times of year, and do not swim far out alone.
When to go
Jaffna is driest from about February to September, when the sea is usually calmest here. Avoid the north-east monsoon, roughly October to January, when weather can be rough. Late afternoon is cooler and lovely for sunset.
How long it takes
A half day, including the drive.
Getting there
Karainagar is about 20 km west of Jaffna town, roughly 45 minutes by road over a causeway. The drive passes salt pans and lagoons with water on both sides.
Practical tips
- Bring water, snacks and sun protection.
- Dress modestly away from the water; this is a conservative area.
- Take your rubbish with you.
