Overview

Munneswaram, near Chilaw on the west coast, is one of the most important Hindu temples in Sri Lanka. It is dedicated to Shiva and is very old, with a long history of rebuilding. It draws Hindu, Buddhist and Catholic visitors alike, which says much about how faiths meet in this part of the country.

The legend

Local tradition links the temple to the Ramayana. After defeating Ravana, Rama is said to have worshipped Shiva here to be freed from the sin of killing. This makes it a key stop for pilgrims following the epic.

What you see

The main temple has a Shiva shrine, a decorated gateway tower and carved images. The complex also includes temples to other deities, including a Kali temple. Inscriptions and sculptures reflect the temple's long past. Puja times bring drums, bells and lamps, and it is worth timing your visit for one.

Festival season

The Munneswaram festival, usually in August or September, draws large crowds over several weeks. It is colourful but very busy.

How long it takes

About an hour at the temple. As a day trip from Kalpitiya, allow four to five hours in total.

Getting there

Munneswaram is just east of Chilaw, roughly an hour and a half by road from Kalpitiya. You can also visit nearby Manavari temple, a short drive away.

Practical tips

  • Remove shoes and cover shoulders and knees; men may be asked to remove shirts in some shrines.
  • Ask before taking photos inside.
