Overview
Kaudulla National Park lies in the dry zone north of Habarana, close to Minneriya. It surrounds the ancient Kaudulla tank, a reservoir traditionally credited to King Mahasena, who also built Minneriya. The park sits on an elephant corridor, and in the right season it is one of the best places in Asia to see large herds.
What you see
Elephants are the main attraction. As water dries up elsewhere, herds move to the grassy edges of the tank, and on a good day you can see dozens together, including young calves. Birds are also plentiful, with storks, pelicans, herons, eagles and many water birds. Spotted deer, crocodiles and water buffalo are common. Leopards and sloth bears live in the region but are rarely seen.
Kaudulla or Minneriya?
The elephants move between the parks depending on water and grass. Jeep drivers usually know which park has the herds on a given day, so be flexible.
When to go
The gathering is usually best from about August to December, with Kaudulla often at its peak later in the season. Afternoon drives are typical, when elephants come to graze and drink.
How long it takes
A safari lasts about three hours.
Getting there
The entrance is on the Habarana to Trincomalee road, about 30 minutes from Habarana and an hour from Sigiriya. Visits are by jeep with a licensed driver.
Practical tips
- Bring binoculars, a hat and water.
- Do not ask drivers to get too close or to chase elephants.
- Keep noise down when near a herd.
