Highlights

  • A reef break by the rocks suits more confident surfers
  • A beach break with easy waves for beginners and bodyboarders
  • Quieter and less crowded than some other surf towns
  • The best months to surf here are November to April

Overview

Mirissa is best known for whales and beaches, but it also has surf. A reef break at the western end of the bay draws intermediate surfers, and the sandier parts of the beach suit beginners on smaller days. With Weligama next door, it is easy to mix surf spots.

The waves

  • The reef break: a right-hand wave off the rocks at the western end of the main beach, in front of the strip of restaurants and guesthouses. Paddle out through the channel, around the large rock. It is fun at shoulder to head height, and there are inside sections for those not ready for the main peak.
  • The beach break: softer waves along parts of the beach, better for learners when the swell is small.

When to go

The south coast season is about November to April, with cleaner swell and drier weather. Mornings usually bring the best conditions, before the wind picks up. From May to October the sea is rough and the bay often blown out.

Lessons and rentals

Several surf shops and schools in Mirissa rent boards and give lessons. Beginners often take lessons in nearby Weligama, where the waves are gentler and more consistent for learning.

How long it takes

A lesson or session lasts about two hours.

Practical tips

  • The reef is shallow in places; wear booties if unsure.
  • The line-up can be crowded; respect locals and wait your turn.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen.
