Highlights
- Quiet beaches on the edge of Tangalle
- A long strip of soft sand for walks
- Medaketiya is one of the better swimming spots in Tangalle
Overview
Medaketiya and Medilla are the long beaches running east of Tangalle town. They are wide, golden and relatively quiet, with guesthouses and small restaurants set back behind the palms. Between the sea and the land lie lagoons and mangroves, which give the area a green, open feel.
What it is like
Medaketiya is closest to town and looks back towards the harbour and fishing boats. Medilla runs further east and is even quieter. Both are good for long walks, sunsets and a slow day. Fishing families still work along the shore, and boats are often pulled up on the sand.
Swimming
Medaketiya is often named as one of the better swimming spots around Tangalle, but waves can still be strong. Conditions change day by day, and there are generally no lifeguards. Ask your guesthouse, watch where locals swim, and stay out when the sea is rough.
When to go
The season runs from about November to April, when the sea is calmer. From May to September, the south-west monsoon brings rougher water.
How long it takes
As long as you like; half a day is a good start.
Getting there
The beaches start just east of Tangalle town centre, a short walk or tuk-tuk ride away.
Practical tips
- Bring shade and water; there is little shelter in places.
- Respect fishermen's boats and nets.
- Turtles nest on beaches in this region; keep lights low at night.
Nearby, visit Rekawa lagoon or join the Rekawa turtle watch. See things to do in Tangalle and Tangalle hotels.
