The Dickwella area, where our hotel picks are based

Hotels in Dickwella

Dickwella sits on the far south coast, roughly three hours from Colombo by expressway. It has two moods: the small horseshoe bay of Hiriketiya, which is all surf boards and cafes, and the calmer beaches around Dickwella town, where you can swim and do very little. Choose your hotel by which of those you want.

For surfers: Hiriketiya

Villa Hiriketiya is a simple, affordable resort about 50 metres from the beach. It is the obvious base if you plan to surf at Hiriketiya every day and eat out in the evenings.

For a quiet beach stay

Dikwella Resort and Spa is a mid-range resort aimed at families, with the reef close enough for snorkelling. Soul Resorts Dickwella is a smaller mid-range boutique hotel on an uncrowded stretch of sand. UTMT, Under the Mango Tree, is the most individual of the four: a chic beachfront hotel with a club-like feel and a programme of activities for guests.

Seasons and nearby sights

The south coast is at its best from about November to April, when the sea is calmer. Within a short drive you can see the Hummanaya blowhole, the Weherahena temple, and the beaches of Tangalle to the east and Mirissa to the west.
