Overview

Mount Lavinia is the nearest proper beach to central Colombo, about 12 km south of the Fort. It is a long strip of sand backed by the suburb of Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia, and it is a favourite place for locals and visitors to catch the sea breeze and the sunset.

What it is like

The beach is lined with cafes, bars and seafood restaurants, from simple shacks to smarter places with tables on the sand. At its southern end, on a small headland, stands the Mount Lavinia Hotel, which grew from a 19th-century residence built for the British governor Sir Thomas Maitland. Evening is the best time, when families walk the sand and the sky turns orange over the sea.

Swimming

Swimming is possible in calmer months, roughly October to April, but the sea can be rough with strong currents, especially in the south-west monsoon. There are not always lifeguards. Swim near others and stay close to shore. The water near the city is not as clean as beaches further south.

How long it takes

An evening or a half day.

When to go

Late afternoon for sunset and dinner. Weekdays are quieter than weekends.

Getting there

The beach is 30 to 45 minutes from Colombo Fort by road, depending on traffic, along Galle Road. The coastal railway stops at Mount Lavinia station, a short walk from the sand.

Practical tips

  • Watch your belongings, especially at busy times.
  • Cross the railway line only at proper crossings.
  • Agree tuk-tuk fares or use a ride-hailing app.
