The Hatton area, where our hotel picks are based

Hotels in Hatton

Hatton is a tea town in the hills, and the gateway to Adam's Peak. The places to stay are not hotels in the usual sense. They are old planters' bungalows, restored with care, with a handful of rooms each, staff who cook for you, and tea estates all around.

The bungalows

Ceylon Tea Trails runs five bungalows, Norwood, Tientsin, Castlereagh, Summerville and Dunkeld, mostly around the Castlereagh reservoir. They are all-inclusive and among the most luxurious stays in the hill country; you can walk between them on estate paths. Craig Appin by Jetwing is a 19th-century bungalow, once the home of a Scottish tea planter, set in gardens. Governor's Mansion stands in the Dickoya valley and was owned by a British governor in colonial times. Camellia Hills is a bungalow with views over the Castlereagh reservoir.

Climbing Adam's Peak

The pilgrimage season runs from about December to May. The climb has more than 5,000 steps to a summit of 2,243 metres, and most people start around 2 am from Dalhousie to reach the top for sunrise. Allow four to six hours up. A bungalow night before and after makes the climb much easier.

Other things to see

Visit St Clair's Falls and Devon Falls on the road towards Talawakele, or have tea at a working factory. Nuwara Eliya is about an hour and a half away.

See our Hatton guide, or compare with hotels in Nuwara Eliya.

Getting there

Hatton is around four hours by road from Colombo, and about two and a half hours from Kandy. The town has a railway station, but trains between Kandy and Nanu Oya have been suspended since Cyclone Ditwah, so for now arrive by road.
