Overview

Mulkirigala Raja Maha Viharaya is a group of Buddhist cave temples on a tall rock rising from the plains about 16 km north of Tangalle. Tradition dates the first monastery here to the 3rd century BC. The temples you see today were largely restored and painted in the Kandyan period, during the 18th century.

What you see

Steps cut into the rock lead up past a series of terraces. On each level, cave shrines hold reclining and seated Buddha images, with walls and ceilings covered in paintings of Jataka tales (stories of the Buddha's previous lives), gods and floral designs. At the summit are a stupa and a bodhi tree, with wide views over paddy fields, forest and the coast.

A link with history

In the 19th century, a British official, George Turnour, is said to have found an important commentary on the Mahavamsa, Sri Lanka's great chronicle, at Mulkirigala. This helped scholars translate the chronicle into English.

How long it takes

About one and a half hours.

When to go
