Overview
Victoria Golf and Country Resort is in Digana, about 30 to 40 minutes east of Kandy. The course sits on rolling hills above the Victoria reservoir, with the Knuckles range in the distance, and is often counted among the most scenic golf courses in Asia.
The course
The championship course was designed by the British architect Donald Steel and laid out on a former coconut estate of around 500 acres. It has 18 holes, measures about 6,900 yards and plays to a par of 73. Holes follow the natural contours of the land, with elevated tees and views over the water. The par-4 6th is usually described as the signature hole.
Playing
Visitors can book a round, with caddies, club hire and buggies available. Green fees and rates change, so check directly before you go. Mornings are cooler and less windy.
Beyond golf
The resort has accommodation, from villas to a lodge-style hotel, and activities such as swimming, tennis, horse riding and birdwatching around the reservoir. Non-golfers can enjoy the views, walks and the clubhouse.
How long it takes
About four to five hours for 18 holes; a half-day for a visit.
When to go
The area is pleasant year round, with heavier rain in the monsoon months. Early tee times are best.
Getting there
Digana is on the road from Kandy towards Mahiyangana, around 25 km from Kandy.
Practical tips
- Bring sun protection and plenty of water.
