11 Nights / 12 Days
This is a tour for people who like to see a country from the saddle. You ride the coast road south from Colombo in five stages of 67 to 80 km, starting at dawn to beat the heat and the traffic, and arrive at each hotel in time for a late breakfast and a lazy afternoon. After Yala the bikes go on the vehicle, and the last part of the trip is about the hill country around Ella.
The cycling stages
- Day 2: Colombo to Kalutara, 67 km, about 3 hours
- Day 3: Kalutara to Unawatuna, 80 km, about 4 hours
- Day 4: Rest day, with an optional 12 km round trip to Galle Fort
- Day 5: Unawatuna to Tangalle, 73 km, about 4 hours
- Day 6: Tangalle to Tissamaharama, 73 km, about 4 hours
The roads are flat along the coast. Early starts matter: from mid-morning the coast road fills with buses, tuk-tuks and school traffic. Your guide and driver follow you throughout.
Along the coast
Day 1 is about arriving, resting and setting up your bike in Colombo. Then you head south to Kalutara and on to Unawatuna, where snorkelling gear can be arranged. The rest day is a good time to ride the short distance to Galle Fort and walk its walls. From Unawatuna the route continues east to Tangalle; surfers may want to stop at Hiriketiya, a small bay known for its waves.
Yala
The last riding day runs past the edge of Bundala National Park, a wetland known for migrant birds, to Tissamaharama near Yala. Day 7 is spent around Tissa Wewa, an old reservoir, with the chance of a ride in a village fishing boat, and later a safari in Yala National Park, best known for its leopards.
Ella and the hills
On day 8 you are driven up to Ella and ride out to the Nine Arches Bridge. Day 9 is a train journey through tea country between Ella and Nanu Oya, then a visit to Nuwara Eliya, returning by road. The Nanu Oya to Ella section of the line was repaired after cyclone damage in late 2025. On day 10 you hike Little Adam's Peak, an easy climb with wide views. Afterwards you can cycle about 27 km to Lipton's Seat or be driven, finishing at a tea factory.
Back to Colombo
Day 11 is a long drive back to Colombo, about seven hours with a lunch stop. On day 12, depending on your flight time, a short city tour can be arranged before your airport transfer.
Who it suits
You should be comfortable riding up to 80 km a day in hot, humid weather. The tour includes accommodation, a guide and support vehicle, and the meals and excursions listed in the day-by-day plan below.
Bring or hire
You can bring your own bike or hire one locally. Bring padded shorts, a helmet, cycling gloves, sunscreen and electrolytes. Traffic in Sri Lanka keeps to the left, buses are fast and use their horns freely, and the hard shoulder is often shared with tuk-tuks and pedestrians, so ride defensively.
